The Injury That Led
To Sciatic's Cure


I was 18 years old, on a routine day at the gym.

Stepping down from a machine, I went to plant my left foot on the ground, but the front of my foot caught on some platform, and my heel just kept going with all my weight behind it…

All at once, my ankle bent upward, my knee went into hyperextension and my back bent forward, placing my sciatic nerve in a dangerously vulnerable position.

As my weight crashed down, I felt an intense, horrific pull originating from my lower back and radiating down my left leg.

In frequent visits to doctors, massage professionals, physiotherapists, chiropractors, radiologists…

It's a damning word to hear: "sciatica".

One diagnosis kept coming up: “sciatica”.

Every single step was pain…

Walking, whenever my left leg would reach the front of my stride, I'd feel the sciatic nerve pull and there'd be pain all up my left leg to my spine.

Sitting for more than 15 minutes would cause it to ache, not that standing was any real relief.

Sometimes I'd “forget”...

A couple of times I went to kick a ball in front of me and the nerve hugely over extended…

Gradually, to evade potentially triggering the sciatic pain, I phased out many activities and movements:

Long walking strides, kicking, bending down (especially with straight legs), running (especially sprinting), cycling, twisting my spine, just to name a few…

My movement also became very careful and very stiff.

And how about my efforts to fix it?

These Solutions Do Not

I tried just about every supposed solution under the sun:

If they were the definitive answer, wouldn't I be pain-free after all this exhaustive effort? Wouldn't you be?

Was there something more to sciatica? More than I was being told?

But what could it be? And how long could I wait to discover it?

My worst fear.

Because as time passed, the debilitating effects of sciatica invaded every aspect of my life.

Beyond the pain, it impacted my career, fitness, sleep, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

Around the 12 year mark, I was spending around USD$1000 a month just to limit the pain as much as possible.

I began to doubt if I'd ever cure it, and I'd end up being old and frail long before I should… and maybe have a bad fall and end up in a wheelchair.

Fortunately, that potential never played out, because I finally encountered someone who could help me: Eero Westerberg.

Finally: Some Good Advice!

In 2016, this very video captured my attention:


On a day like any other when I was living in Medellin, Columbia, I saw a video of Eero Westerberg doing these amazing movements.

As I explored his work, I heard him explain a key concept that he'd used to heal pain and develop amazing mobility:

“Body Consciousness”.

When I first heard him say it, I mistakenly thought, “Oh, I already know about that.

Though I could not have been more wrong and I'm so lucky that I kept listening.

In fact, I was so intrigued that I signed up for 1-on-1 coaching so that I could learn and apply “Body Consciousness”.

My Initial Understanding of
"Body Consciousness"

Study this carefully:

Body Consciousness is our natural ability to perceive our body.

Especially, to feel, control and connect with our muscles, tendons and joints.

Usually, we move "unconsciously"”. We simply “go through the motions”.

It's mechanical.

It's a “surface-level” experience.

We might be counting repetitions or seeing how far we can stretch.

But we're not truly engaged with what's happening in our body.

With Body Consciousness, the experience is much deeper.

Instead of just moving or stretching, we're actively feeling every detail of the movement.

We're deeply aware of each muscle, tendon, and joint involved and we have much greater control over our movements.

In the earliest exercises that Eero gave me, I noticed immediate benefits and improvements, even if minor at this stage.

I was able to notice the tension in my muscles, the stiffness in my joints and the impingements on my sciatic nerve with much greater subtlety and nuance.

And I was therefore able to move in a way that was more aligned, efficient & comfortable.

I could actually perceive, moment-to-moment, how to restructure my body into better posture and alignment, meaning that improvement became literally constant.

This is certainly something I'm going to teach you to do, because it sets the foundation for what comes next.

Releasing Sciatica At Your Knee

Most sciatica sufferers should first target the nerve at the knee

One of the early exercises that Eero gave to me was to sit on a chair and attempt to straighten my leg.

I objected, “Oh I don't know if I'm ready for that, because straightening my leg can really pull on my sciatic nerve.

Even if I don't get that “zap” feeling, I'll probably be aching for days.”

Though he helped me realize: there's no need to be afraid.

With Body Consciousness, you maintain complete control over your pain level, so you'll never go into much discomfort at all.

So, one night I built up the courage to try the exercise…

Previews demonstrate the form, though movements are done ultra-slowly.

I moved slowly and gently…

I reminded myself, “I'm not stretching my hamstrings.

I'm not strengthening my quads.

I'm not mobilizing my nerve.

I'm consciously exploring the sensations in my knee, my leg, my hip, my lower back.

Just be conscious of the body and improvement will happen naturally.”

I could feel so much tension at the back of my knee… in my gluteal area… at the base of my spine… I could feel so much resistance to the movement….

But I sunk deeper into a meditative, present, watchful state of being…

And then something totally unexpected happened…

I began to have flashbacks of moments in my life that I'd experienced intense sciatic pain…

Alternate position to gently target the sciatic nerve at the knee

I began to feel rushes of fear and anxiety…

I heard thoughts racing through my mind, like “My lower back is wrecked”, “There's so much pressure”, “I can barely move”, “This sciatica is killing me”....

That might sound like a bad experience… but because I was so calm, present and conscious…

It wasn't.

It was actually peaceful.

And as these crazy memories, emotions and thoughts processed through my being…

Muscles in my hamstring, gluteal region and lower back began to relax

I could literally feel the pressure on my sciatic nerve ease

Ultra-slow + Body Consciousness = sciatic nerve releases

And then I was actually able to painlessly straighten my leg.

I felt my quadriceps come alive…

I stood up and my legs felt so strong and stable…

I could feel my glutes and hip rotator muscles engage and I walking around my apartment so powerfully, feeling more balanced, strong and alive than I'd felt in 12 years.

Even though that one exercise had not instantly healed absolutely everything, I was immediately in love with “Body Consciousness” exercises...

Releasing Sciatica At Your Buttock Region

Over the coming months, as I dove deeper into my own understanding, combining Eero's guidance with my own research and movement experimentation…

I had another experience that shed more light on sciatica…

Medical and fitness professionals often target sciatica with overly aggressive stretching.

People with sciatica often deal with the 'piriformis syndrome', where the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve.

(The piriformis is a deep external rotator of the hip).

I developed a relaxing position to target the piriformis, an alternative to standard aggressive stretches.

As I settled into this position, memories of my initial injury flooded back.

I remembered feeling lost and unsure about what steps to take next.

The pain from the injury left me feeling stuck, like I didn't know where to turn for help or how to move forward.

It felt like every direction I thought about taking came with the risk of more pain.

This came with a heavy emotion: dread.

The dread of possibly being stuck in this pain forever, of not finding a way out.

Accompanying this dread was a sense of hopelessness, making me question if I'd ever be free from this torment.

This position releases the sciatic nerve in the buttock region.

Interestingly, as these emotions washed over me, I felt a significant release in my piriformis, hip, and spine, and my sciatic nerve felt “free”...

At this point it was clear to me that sciatica was a “mind-body” condition, not just a set of physical symptoms, which is why general stretching and strengthening never have long-lasting effects.

I'll repeat that because it's so crucial to your recovery:

Sciatica is a mind-body condition. It is not just a set of physical symptoms.

The experience with the piriformis indicated that sciatica is deeply related to feeling “stuck” and “trapped” in life, and not knowing in which direction to go.

Targeted exercises with “Body Consciousness” seemed to be able to gently evoke repressed emotions, sentiments, fears, and so on, and release pain permanently…

Releasing Sciatica At Your Lower Spine

Soon, I experienced a release directly linked to my lower spinal vertebrae, where the sciatic nerve originates.

During an exercise, lying on my side, I initiated a gentle rocking of my leg and hip.

This position, ultra-slow with body consciousness, releases the sciatic nerve at the lower spine.

Deeply focusing my lower spinal vertebrae, I encountered a repressed feeling, which many of my students have stated that they too have encountered.

And that is: "feeling unsupported".

Not only unsupported by a medical establishment that couldn't help me, but also many areas of my life: work, relationships, finances and more.

Acknowledging this feeling led to a remarkable release in my lower spinal vertabrae.

My sciatic nerve had never felt so good.

Hi Matt. I had debilitating muscles spasms in my lower back. This was in my quadratus lumborum muscle. ANY movement would create a painful spasms. Thanks, Matt. Yesterday I did it! I was just at the end of my routine when I intuitively started to rotate my pelvis very slowly back and forth. I had my hands on the back extensors to increase the sensation and played around with the tension there. I really love your set of movements. I enjoy doing them and put them as the most important thing in my daily life now. Some of them are difficult, not because of the pain, but because I do not have the good connection between the mind and the location of the body - I am building it.
